AudioLumo vs Soundminer: a focused Mac library or a studio toolkit?

Soundminer is a family of professional database and sound-design tools. AudioLumo has a narrower aim: make your own Mac sound library easy to search, preview and use. The right choice depends on whether you need a personal library manager or a larger studio workflow.

Our recommendation

AudioLumo

AudioLumo is our recommendation for a personal Mac library when straightforward search, annotation and WAV export are the brief. Soundminer is the stronger specialist choice for advanced sound design, Pro Tools workflows and edition-specific server or metadata requirements. Compare the actual V7 edition you need.

Compare with the right Soundminer edition

Soundminer V7 Basic is listed at US$199 for a single platform, Plus at US$399 and Pro at US$899. Universal Mac-and-Windows licensing adds US$100 to the single-platform price. These are distinct editions, not interchangeable names for the same feature set. Basic provides the entry search workflow; the higher editions expand the production tools.

The V7 Basic product page describes tabbed searching, assignable commands, a playlist and an AAX monitor plugin. Pro adds the Radium sound-design environment, similarity tools and server connectivity. AudioLumo does not claim equivalents for those advanced features. If those tools save time in your studio, a higher-priced Soundminer edition can be the sensible purchase.

Where AudioLumo has the clearest advantage

Many editors need a smaller set of actions repeatedly: find a recording, hear it, mark the useful seconds and export the result. AudioLumo brings those actions together with a local catalog, keyboard-led search and waveform selection. Your folders remain in place, with collections and saved searches helping you organise material without relocating it.

For this personal-library brief, AudioLumo's planned one-time price is an attractive entry point. It is designed for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later, without an AudioLumo account. Soundminer also supports Mac and offers Windows editions; that cross-platform choice matters if your working environment is broader than one Mac.

Metadata editing is not automatically metadata compatibility

AudioLumo supports descriptions, keywords, custom fields and batch changes. It can store its own annotations in supported audio containers, with a sidecar fallback for other formats. This helps keep personal notes with a library, but it is not a promise that arbitrary fields will map to Soundminer, BWF or iXML in another application.

Soundminer publishes a deeper metadata and production workflow across its editions. If you deliver libraries with a defined studio schema or need sophisticated metadata transformation, validate that exact task in the relevant edition. A simple 'metadata: yes' row hides too much to be a useful buying decision.

Check transfer and licensing requirements

AudioLumo exports WAV files, including selected ranges, for use with editors such as Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve. It does not claim native Pro Tools spotting, an AAX monitor plugin, plugin hosting or a Soundminer server connection. File export and direct studio integration solve different problems.

Soundminer's product pages offer iLok or CodeMeter licensing and also document iLok Cloud support. Adding a new CodeMeter USB key costs US$80 before shipping in the checked store options. It would be inaccurate to say every buyer must purchase a physical dongle. Include your chosen license method, platform and any upgrade cost in your evaluation.

Our choice for the independent Mac editor

Choose AudioLumo if the goal is to rediscover sounds you already own without buying a broad sound-design environment. Search, personal metadata, offline-drive catalog visibility and a focused preview-to-export workflow are the reasons to choose it—not a claim that it includes every professional feature.

Choose Soundminer if your work depends on its specialist features or you need a production tool available today. AudioLumo's Mac App Store release is still in preparation. Watch the walkthrough, list your non-negotiable requirements and make the decision on that list rather than on a universal 'winner' badge.

Questions before you choose

Is AudioLumo a full Soundminer Pro replacement?

No. It targets personal Mac library management, search, preview and file export. Soundminer Pro includes specialist sound-design and studio features outside AudioLumo's scope.

Does Soundminer only run on Mac?

No. The checked V7 product pages offer Mac, Windows and Universal licensing. AudioLumo currently targets Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later.

Does a one-time purchase include all future major upgrades?

Do not assume that. The prices here describe the listed license or planned AudioLumo app purchase. Soundminer publishes paid upgrade options; no promise of every future AudioLumo major version is made here.
